Lawana Louise Kohnle (nee Downs), 87, a St. Louis native, former resident of Florissant, Missouri, and since 1987, living in Boca Raton, Florida, passed away on October 18, 2015. She was preceded in death by her dear husband of 47 years, Pearl Harbor Survivor Wilbur F. ("Ace" or "Bill") Kohnle. She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Pohl, of Boca Raton, her son, Mark Kohnle and his wife, Sarah, of Columbia, Missouri; by her brother, Bill (B.C.) Downs and his wife Jeannie, and her sister, Darlene Johnson, and by four grandsons, Benjamin Pohl and his wife, Kimberly; Nicholas Pohl and his wife, Jessica, David Kohnle and his wife Corey, and Daniel Kohnle; and also by her precious infant great-grandson, Douglas Pohl. She was rich with family and friends from coast to coast, and treasured by everyone. She and Bill were founding members of St. Mark's Methodist Church in Florissant, where they raised their family, and later became active members of their church in Boca Raton. Lawana and Bill enjoyed traveling this country, and together made several trips to Hawaii, including for the 50th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor, where they were received as honored guests. But she most enjoyed people, and gatherings of family and friends at their homes for holidays, birthdays, and any event that brought her together with those she loved. As a quintessential post-war housewife raising children in the suburbs, she and her famous "card club" group gathered weekly for years to play poker (with a $2 limit), drinking Coke, laughing, and forming friendships and memories that would endure through decades. Bill called her his "Wannie," but whether she was Wannie, Lawana, Mom, Aunt or Grandma, "Mrs. Kohnle," or simply "my friend," she had a unique ability to brighten everyone's day, because she genuinely cared about people, and enjoyed every moment.
