Condolence & Memory Journal

I REMEMBER JIM FROM HIS HIGH SCHOOL DAYS HERE IN LINCOLN AND SAW NEARLY ALL OF THE BASKETBALL GAMES THAT HE PLAYED IN. IT WAS HIS BROTHER JACK WHO TOOK MUCH OF HIS TIME TO TEACH ME HOW TO BE AN ALTAR SERVER BACK WHEN WE HAD TO KNOW THE MASS RESPONSES IN LATIN. FR CASEY WAS OUR PASTOR AT THE TIME. JIM WAS ALSO AN ALTAR BOY, BUT WAS MUCH OLDER THAN I. OVER THE MORE RECENT YEARS I WOULD LOOK FORWARD TO HIM BEING AT THE MAYHEW DOHERTY REUNIONS HELD HERE IN LINCOLN. JIM WAS A GREAT GUY AND WILL BE MISSED BY ALL WHO KNEW HIM.

I just learned about Jim's passing today when Charlene notified me. I'm so sorry to hear of this. Our families have known each other since Springfield, Mass. days, and my father Art Hoffman worked with Jim at Monsanto, first in Springfield then in St. Louis. Charlene, Kathy, and Jim went to Holy Cross school with me, my sister Julie, and my brother, Art. I remember our days at St. Patrick's Church, as both Jim and my Dad were very active in the parish together. Our parents were good friends for my entire lifetime. I remember both Jim and Barbara with a special fondness. I always listed him as a reference whenever I applied for jobs. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Please make sure Barbara knows I send my love.

I am so sorry to hear of Jim's passing. He was such a nice man and I enjoyed working with him at Monsanto. He will be missed by all those who were lucky enough to have known Jim.

I knew Jim as friend and colleague and always as a man of integrity. His sense of humor and his intelligence made him a joy to be with; his love and devotion to Barbara and their children added to the pleasure of knowing him.

Jim's death means we've lost another one of the nice guys. My heartfelt sympathy to Barb and their family.

My cousin Quent Boyle reminded me that my mother, Margaret Mary (Donahue) Boyle had Jim as a student in Lincoln Public Schools. I remember Mom speaking of what a good student Jim was and she always spoke fondly of him. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Jim Doherty was President of the Advisory Board of the Criminal Justice Ministry (CJM) when it was sponsored by the Society of St. Vincent DePaul Society. He volunteered with prisoners--relating easily and respectfully with them as individuals--and he used his skills to help CJM reorganize to better assist those in need. Jim did extraordinary things in such an ordinary way. He has surely been warmly welcomed by Jesus Christ, who also was comfortable with persons excluded by society.

Our sincerest and most heartfelt condolences to you all. We cherish our memories of family gatherings in New Hampshire and your family's sense of inclusiveness. A special memory is when Jim and Barbara opened their home in Clayton to my daughter Jessica and me on a college visit and lent us their car to travel to Chicago. This act of hospitality and generosity was truly appreciated. We will greatly miss you Jim. God bless. Love to you all - Barbara, Jessica, Bryan, and Christopher

Dear Ann,

I am so sorry for the recent loss of your father. You and your family members continue to be in my prayers.......and I praise God that you have the hope in Christ of one day reuniting with your dad and siblings in Heaven. In the mean time, we who remain here are safely in our our Lord's loving grip.

I worked for Jim in the 1970's. I mentioned him recently to my husband as a person who gave faith to me as a family oriented role model. I recently read one of the ways we live on is through our example motivating others to live up to our example and, in turn, pass that on to their children - and on and on. He provided that to me, my daughter and now my grandchildren. And I know he lives on through his loving family.

My condolences to his family.

I was so sorry to hear of Mr. Doherty's passing. I have so many wonderful memories of my visits to Clayton and his and Mrs Doherty's visits to Xavier. Over the years I heard countless stories from Helene of what an incredible father and grandfather he was.
My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Doherty family at this difficult time.
Love,
Tricia
